Chasebook, Spycrosoft, Trapple - how to keep some privacy

In light of all the revelations about big US telecommunication and information companies being forced to add backdoors to their products while simultaneously being forced to shut up or go to jail - so to speak, this thread is meant to collect ideas about how to protect oneself from all those private data hunting scum.

This thread is not meant for people who don't care about their privacy. Thank you.

My first row of tips are the following ones:

1. If even possible - avoid security related Soft- and Hardware such as motherboards, Cell-Phones, Tablets, Router, Firewalls, Chatsoftware etc. provided by US manufacturers. Chinese products may not be better, by the way. Remember: If there are backdoors in those products - they're most probably a potential target for Hackers as well now.

2. Install a Firewall and block anything you don't know or trust - unless a service you really need doesn't work anymore. You know, like the Internet connection itself. You're decision whether you trust US-Firewall hard- and software.

3. Use a virtual Linux running simultaneously on your machine for online purposes if you're on a Windows or Apple machine.

4. Avoid products of the big American software and internet services giants.

5. If possible - install open source or non-US encryption software for your private data. BTW: don't use predefined folders such as "My(crosofts) Documents".

6. Keep yourself informed about security updates.

7. Use security related add-ons for your browser like a cookie-manager, ad-blocker, flashblocker etc...

8. Store your data on an USB device you can disconnect if it's not needed. By that I'm not talking about data you need all the time.

9. Stay away from big US E-Mail services.

Your turn ....
