Hopefully this (Science) is the correct forum to ask a general question.
I was kayaking in Lake Erie yesterday (have done so many times in this area) and noticed that several large trees (sorry, I cannot reliably identify most trees) had red moss under the water line. Not many of them, seemed to be only the really large ones. The moss above the water line at the base of the tree was green, but when the waves receded I could see that all the moss under the water was a very distinct red.
I couldn't find anything about this in a google search. Was just curious if anyone here might be familiar with this. I was in Lake Erie on the Canadian side around Long Point, Ontario area.
