I first came across the idea just a couple of days ago, but apparently, the idea's been around for some time, as articles on the subject go back to 2017: https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local...om-the-lexicon
Clearly, nobody here got the memo either, because a search contains lots of threads with "marijuana" in the title, but none of them appear to be about racist connotations: http://www.internationalskeptics.com...archid=5246806
I've gone back ten years and no mention...
To me, even the reasons given for it being racist are bollocks, with this piece the key, from the article linked:
Given it's an actual word for the drug, and that it joined the English language in 1873 at the latest, the idea that it's defined by some loon from the 1930s is nonsense.
The word is universal, and used by millions of people who wouldn't know a Mexican if they fell over one, so the idea that it's racist against Mexicans is specifically American, and can be safely ignored.
As you were.

Many people arent aware of the history of the term marijuana, which is linked to campaigns in the U.S. in the 1930s to demonize the plant by associating it with Mexican immigrants. |
