So what, here in 2020, does everyone back up on their home PCs and how do they do it? Both general discussion and some requests for advice.
It just struck me the other day that I don't actually have a traditional "backup" of my home PC anymore and I've actually put thought into what the point is.
Okay so my primary PC is Lenovo Legion Y540 Laptop, running Windows 10 on a single 2.5" 7200 HDD. I have a couple of older computers still in various state of functionality (A crappy Acer Aspire touchscreen laptop that I just keep as a bare bones ultra-portable, and my previous primary machine a last gen Asus laptop)
But here's the thing.
- The OS is Windows 10, I have physical media copies of it, and I can re-install that in my sleep in about an hour if necessary.
- All my documents are back up to either Google or Amazon's various "cloud" services.
- All my games and their save files are on Steam, Origin, Epic Store, etc.
- All my software that isn't games or the OS itself is Open Source
- All my media is either burned/ripped from physical media I still own or... on the cloud with Amazon or Google or whoever.
What... am I backing up? My computer craps the bed right now what can I not get back?
So do home users still have a "backup plan" anymore? Is it necessary? Has "The Cloud" killed the backup? Is it the backup? And what about Scarecrows brain?
