I was debating a strict bible thumping christian on a facebook page and she made the claim that America was founded on christian principles. So i did some research found this quote from Thomas Jefferson " Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination." So I posted it and made my argument that the US was not founded on Christian nation. Next thing I know, i am banned from the page because " My rule is anyone who comes here and proclaims America was NOT founded on Christian principles. Automatic ban. Learn your history."
I am confused and need some help clarifying if the US was founded on Christian principles or not. I know several of the founding fathers were deist. So was the US founded or not founded on Christian principles?
