According to Dutch radio, job centre UWV, the agency that is responsible for both paying unemployment benefits and for trying to help people get a job, fully reimburses the costs for a training for "spiritual phone consultant", to the tune of *1,000 per student.
Site Dutchnews.nl reports:
That is the claim from the UWV. However, according to newspaper AD (link in Dutch), which broke the news this morning, the "training institute" Paradidakt claims to have trained dozens of people since 2008. UWV defends its reimbursement because it is (a) a registered training, and (b) the training institute gives a job guarantee. That job guarantee is quite weak, IMHO. They promise the trained "spiritual consultant" a place in their call center with earnings of *0.29 per minute phone conversation. That boils down to 17.40/hour gross income, IF the "consultant" is constantly on the phone.
I think it's a scandal that the government wastes my tax money on, basically, a training designed to con people out of their money, and take advantage of vulnerable sides of people. In the 8 o'clock news, chairman Cees Renckens of the Dutch Association against Quackery, said: "we're not subsidizing training for prostitute or pole dancer either". Though that comparison undoubtedly resonates with quite a few people, I disagree with it. Those are professions that provide tangible benefit and don't lie about the service they provide. (FYI: prostitution is legal in the Netherlands).
I hope this decision is quickly reversed. Two MPs have already asked questions to the responsible minister. One of those MPs belongs to the orthodox-protestant SGP party. There is some irony in there. :)
The radio broadcast is yet to air: Sunday 14 June, between 19:00-20:00 hrs CET, but the news already broke this morning in the newspaper AD.
