I was thinking about various disagreements here about gun rights, hate speech, campaign contributions, etc. Rather than arguing, I wanted to survey the range of beliefs about how we view right.
When we think about rights, let's focus on the broader right to vote (and democratic/republic government), right to self defense (and right to acquire guns for it, and a right to free speech. If you favor these rights, are they the means or the ends?
Do you support these rights as a means? Are they the best way to achieve the desirable outcome? Would you throw them out if you were convinced removing them would improve outcomes?
Do you support rights as the desirable ends? Are the rights themselves the end goal of respecting humanity? Is this true regardless of the consequences?
