Briefly: Google ATAP (Advanced Technology And Projects) and Infineon have created a 5mm x 5mm device which uses RF to capture submillimetre motions of overlapping fingers in 3D space, at up to 10,000 frames/second. According to ATAP, "your hand could become a virtual dial to control volume on a speaker, or a virtual touchpad to browse a map on a smartwatch screen."
They plan to release a development board and software API later this year. I hope this lives up to expectations, and that the dev board isn't prohibitively expensive...
