Alterating brain instead of altering body for transgender scientifically researched?

If i understand correctly, there are people who think they are mentally a different sex than biologically. The current proposed solution of the problem seems to be to alter the body accordingly both chirurgically and chemically or hormonally with the later requiring continous medication, otherwise the innate gender body chemistry will take over again.



Or in short words, with mind and body not matching, one alters the body.



Considering that the human brain is highly adaptable and imaginative, to what extent has the option of instead altering the mind to fit to the body been scientifically researched?



As a stupid example, hormones alter body functions. If they would also alter brain functions, taking a hormone cocktail to alter the brain functions so the mind feels more aligned with the gender of the body, would be an alternative. Has something like that ever been scientifically researched?



Or in short words, with mind and body not matching, what is scientifically known and researched about altering the mind?



(Note that i use the word scientifically, because i am not interested in a discussion about what some of the less evidence minded psychologists or even religious people have tried.)
