Apparently in Mississippi, a placenta is considered medical waste. So this woman, who wanted to try the ancient/hippie mom placentophagy thing, had to, while she was still pregnant, get a court order. Otherwise they'd just take it away and incinerate it (or sell it to researchers or cosmetics companies).
I'm not taking a stance on whether eating placenta has any actual benefits, but it's a bit silly to need to clog up the courts to keep something you grew yourself. Barring any blood-borne illnesses, a simple form stating that you took responsibility for proper disposal ought to be enough. When I was having my kids, the nurses just asked if you wanted it.
