Could international streaming video be a tool to help different cultures understand each other, and offer more nuanced views than the broad stereotypes that exist around the world?
"Orange is the New Black" is dubbed into at least 12 languages and features probably the most diverse cast ever in popular entertainment - fat, skinny, young, old, black, white, brown, straight, gay, bi, trans - and the dubbing employs several hundred voice actors all over the world. "House of Cards" also is fairly diverse and has multiple bisexual plot lines.
Netflix also carries "Wentworth," an Australian series that offers an interesting (and yes, I know, fictional) contrast to the sometimes-comic OITNB. It covers similar ground, in a generally more serious way. The women have all committed violent crimes, if you count DUIs that have killed or maimed people. This is a very pointed contrast to the American series, which reflects the high incarceration rate in the U.S.
"Beasts of No Nation" matches factual accounts I've read of children conscripted into informal African armies and conditioned with drugs and terror to become ruthless killers.
Dubbing or subtitling popular entertainment from around the world could be a powerful positive force, especially if more Americans become willing to read subtitles.
