I've brought this issue up before. I am endlessly saddened by the situation we've created in northern California where we have huge stretches of urban environment that are too damned expensive to live in thanks to huge income stratification and not nearly enough housing!

Short version for those that don't want to visit the link: teachers in Silicon Valley cannot afford to live there. Commute times are getting ridiculous as affordable housing is getting increasingly further away from where the school is. So they have contemplated building specific affordable housing for teachers but rich residents around the proposed housing are probably going to fight it.
