North Carolina passes pro-bigotry law

The (Republican controlled) General Assembly of the US state of North Carolina has passed a bill that prevents cities and counties from passing their own anti-discrimination rules. If signed into law by (Republican) governor Pat McCrory the bill would remove protections against discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity grounds. In the words of LGBT rights campaigners, it would demonise the community and that it espouses bogus claims about increasing the risk of sexual assaults.

The bill is a response to a recent measure by the city of Charlotte which passed a broad anti-discrimination measure that allows transgender people (one of the current Republican bogiepeople) to use the restroom aligned with their gender identity.

But hey, it's an election year and the Republicans need to stir up imaginary threats to get the voters out....
