UK - Another NHS Crisis

The Health Minister Jeremy Hunt (btw this is now official rhyming slang) has proposed a new contract for junior doctors which has an advertised 11% pay increase but will abolish out of hours and unsociable hours payments which means that most junior doctors will be significantly worse off.

Although they're annoyed about the pay cut, the doctors claim that the bigger issue is the changes to working hours which means that the NHS will have to offer a 24/7 full service with the same number of doctors. This 24/7 requirement is based on a study which showed that 30 day survival for people admitted out of hours was significantly worse. Whilst the study made it abundantly clear that there were lots of confounding factors, the Conservatives took it at face value to provide them with a sick to beat the NHS with.

The 24/7 requirement will mean more weekend and out of hours work for junior doctors which, combined with less money will cause issues, not least for childcare.

I don't trust the Conservatives with the NHS - they want a U.S. based model - and I especially don't trust Jeremy Hunt.

edited to add..........

I was amazed at how low junior doctors' salaries are:

Quote:

The health secretary's proposed rise to basic pay would see a new doctors' salary rise from £22,636 to £25,500.
