I remember taking an intro to architecture course, and one section talked about transitional architectural periods where in Europe the architecture got less impressive as the year 1000 was drawing closer because the main belief was that the apocalypse was approaching.
When the apocalypse did not happen, the Europeans were relieved and revamped their architectural style to Romanesque from 1000 on.
I probably butchered how the lecture really went, but is there any truth to this? Was there mass paranoia in Europe around the late 900s believing the world was ending in 1000 CE?
