Mysterious inscription on medieval sword.

The British Library has asked for assistance from the public in deciphering the inscription on a thirteenth century sword blade found in a river in England in 1825
Knwon as "the River Witham sword" the weapon dates from the thirteenth century and is on display at the library. On one edge of the 95cm blade in the inscription +NDXOXCHWDRGHDXORVI+ inlaid in gold wire. However no-one knows what this means.

There are speculations that it's some form of religious invocation, typical of the short-form Latin inscriptions found on medieval blades. In this case the ND may be Nostrum Dominus or Nomine Domini with XOX being a reference to the trinity.
