Between 1904 to 1906 George Parker Bidder III of the Marine Biological Association in Britain released more than 1,000 message containing bottles into the North Sea to learn more about currents. The bottles were designed to float just above the seafloor, in order to catch the deep ocean currents, and most were found within a few months. Bidder used the data obtained to prove that the deep sea current in the North Sea flowed east to west.
And now one of his bottles has turned up found by a holidaymaker, Marianne Winkler, on North Sea island of Amrum. She opened it and returned the postcard to the MBA. It's not known if the association will pay the promised shilling...
Telegraph.
Ah, science. :)
