I have previously mentioned this book from my (and my father's) childhood, the great almost lost childrens classic "Whirlaway" from the 1930's, which tells the story of the evolution of life through the device of a small sprite-like creature taking a girl and her pet koala on a journey through deep time.
My own copy is fragile and dilapidated, so often was it read.
Now it is on Gutenberg complete with the original illustrations and colour plates. I had often wanted to put it on Gutenberg myself but never had time and was unwilling to submit my own copy to a scanner.
I suppose a lot of the science is out of date, but it still seems to me the best introduction to this area of science for children that I have ever seen.
