Republican lust for war, Iran hatred and devotion to Israel

What is going on here? Are John Bolton and "bomb bomb Iran" McCain really mainstream Republicans? When did Republicans decide that all forms of Israeli colonialism and Palestinian mistreatment are in the American interest? What in the heck drives the Republican desire for war in the Mideast? The last neocon/Republican war in Iraq has done staggering damage to Iraq, to the US and to the world. Why doesn't abject failure lead to some introspection about the benefits of US led wars in the Middle east?

Over the last ten years, I have come to believe that American politics are driven to a much greater degree by partisan self interest than I believed previously, but is this lust for war really in the Republican political interest?

The Republicans have driven the national discourse on Israel into a bizarre area where American interests have been subjugated to the desires of the Israel militants. From a political point of view: Why? I get the various interests that drive the Republican party here, including the military/industrial complex, the Israeli lobbies and the various groups in the US that are devoted to Israeli militancy and the eventual elimination of the Palestinians from what they see as the long term country of Israel.

But are these groups really strong enough to create enough political advantage for the Republicans to make the Republican Mideast policies a net political advantage?

And what's with Obama in all this? The last American president to stand up to Israel (George Bush I) possibly lost an election for doing it. Today there is hardly a mainstream Democrat that doesn't genuflect to Israel periodically. What in the heck makes Obama think he can stand up to that? Maybe I missed something here but it looks like Netanyahu won on just about every level recently. Even his move to embarrass the US, the Democrats and Obama with his in your face appearance before congress worked out for him. What makes Obama think that anything he does could have any lasting effect on US Middle East policy?
