Stopping Bird Strikes

Don Towers has a large wooden deck and the master bedroom has good-sized balcony, both are surrounded by glass railings. Last year we had fewer than 10 bird strikes and the victims were species we have in abundance (tree sparrows, blue tits and starlings). This year we have already had six and the victims have included a pied wagtail, a sparrowhawk and this morning a mistle thrush.

We've moved any feeders to the top of well away from the glass but we wonder what other steps we could take to limit the number of bird strikes without disfiguring the glass too much.

Suggestions from here include:

  • Obscuring the glass with oil, fake snow, fake spiders webs or cling film

  • Putting up branches in front of the glass

  • Screens or netting

  • Predator silhouettes

  • A feather guard

None of these particularly appeal because of how they look. I suppose the feather guard is the least bad because it'll look less unnatural.

What would you recommend ?
