For example, do situations like the following make a good justification for the private ownership of guns?

If you didn't feel like watching it, two robbers try to hold up a convenience store. One of them pulls out a gun. The store owner responds by pulling out his own gun and the robber is shot dead in under a second (Perhaps even under half a second). The store owner had obviously rehearsed his quick draw and was extremely proficient in using his firearm for self defense.
This is just one example. Do situations like these warrant the private ownership of guns? Or should we still just ban them altogether, leaving the criminals as the only ones armed?
