inflation / expansion

Farsight - or anybody with the answer, in order not to disturb the seriousness of your debate elsewhere I'll post this new. You said:

"I don't have any issue with big bang cosmology. From what I know of fundamental physics, space has to expand. It cannot not expand. The issue I have is with inflation. It's unnecessary. Big bang cosmology is better off without it."

My question: How are you distinguishing expansion from inflation? Maybe I am misreading but you seem to be using them as antonyms. I'm sure this is related to cosmology but I cannot find it in dictionary searches.

Thanks for an explanation.
