Autonomous webcam/camera for timed interval shots

I have a personal project in mind that would call for pictures taken at intervals of several seconds for a couple of days. I've done something similar once before with a webcam, at intervals of several minutes for a few weeks, but the computer did the timing, sent the "shoot" commands, and saved the data, so it had to be on the whole time, and I'd rather not do that again in this case. Are there webcams that can work autonomously for a while and just dump their data the next time they're connected to a computer?

I know ordinary cameras, as opposed to webcams, do save their own data, but I've never heard of one that could be programmed to keep shooting like this if left alone. Are there any?

Another trait that would be good for this particular project is a fisheye lens, which made me think of security cameras. I know some of them take single shots at intervals instead of video, but they're normally connected to computers, like webcams. Does that mean they need to be connected to work, or can they run on their own and dump the data later?

Is there a name for the feature I'm looking for? Do they just call it "time-lapse" or "timer mode" or something more jargony? Whatever it's called, would it appear in the devices' lists of features when you're shopping online?
