Today is not World Toilet Day

Because I forgot it was yesterday. :o My bad, though I blame the 'flu, the cat and the medication.

Anyway, WTD is about the lack of toilets and proper sanitation, a huge and widespread problem in parts of the developing world (particularly south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa) with horrible public health consequences. Some facts:

  • 2.5 billion people (one third of the global population) do not have access to sustainable sanitation

  • Diarrheal diseases are the second most common cause of death in young children in developing countries

  • They kill more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and measles combined

(UN via CNN) The Al Jazerra story is also useful.
