The 'jazzy' eye thing

It starts with a small spot of what I can only call jazzy(!) light, then develops into constantly shimmering chess board pattern in one or two sections and then adds some fluorescent-looking lights at the undefined edge. Lasts for approximately ten-fifteen minutes and then fades. It has happened a little more often recently - probably because of my open-heart surgery and change of medication. It appears sometimes to be connected with a rise in blood pressure and sometimes not, so I think that can probably be counted as coincidental.

What I'd like to ask is: what is happening in the brain when this happens? Does anyone know what I should google to read more about it?I do like to know the facts!

It is perhaps a little more of a nuisance in my case, since it obscures a chunk of the peripheral vision I rely on.

I would be most grateful for information here.
