vube.com - scam/manipulation?

I'm in the (amateur) music business, and it has come to my attention that a band in my circles has gotten nearly 2 million views on a video. That's insane! Or? The "catch", if there is one, is that it's not on youtube, it's on vube.com, I site I have no prior knowledge of.

Some googling has shown me that vube.com has marketed themselves as a new competitor to youtube, have risen from nothing to site no. 76 in the world since summer 2013 - in viewcount - And they have recieved criticism for their aggresive add-policies, with people on the net complaining about pop-ups and adware.

I get some red flags on this: the song has about 4000 views on youtube, and some 130 likes, and 30 comments.

On vube.com it has nearly 2 million views, 200 likes and 7 comments. Does this sound reasonable? After looking at other videos, I have to say the quality of the vieos and songs do not correspond with their viewcounts. Mediocre productions and music of unknown entities gets 20-30 million views.

I'm not some jealous musician, the people in the band are very good friends of mine. I have not stated my concerns to them, because all i have is suspicions at this point. If there is insincerity, e.g. if vube is bloating their numbers, this will come out eventually, and this may affect the band negatively if they use it as marketing. People may wrongly see them as cheaters, or best case, naive victims of a internet hoax.

I want the band to be cautious of this, and if there is a scam, prepared ahead of time before this gets to the press.

What do you think and why? Hoax or not?
