Every day, teams at Facebook make difficult decisions about what content should stay up and what should come down based on our Community Standards. But given the size of our community and the reach of our platform we dont think we should be making all of these decisions on our own. In November, Mark Zuckerberg laid out a plan for a new way for people to appeal content decisions to an independent board. And earlier this year, we released a draft charter giving more detail about its potential structure. Today, were opening a public consultation process to help us answer questions around the design for this Oversight Board. This is another part of our ongoing, global engagement with a wide range of organizations, think tanks and researchers to determine how best to empower this entity to render independent judgment on some of Facebooks most important and challenging content decisions. |

What will the Oversight Board do? The Board's purpose is to provide oversight over many of Facebook's content decisions, in accordance with the policies and values we use to make those decisions. The Board will be a global body of independent experts who will review some of Facebook's most challenging content decisions, focusing on important and highly disputed cases. It will share its decisions transparently and give reasons for them. The Board will be able to reverse Facebooks decisions about whether to allow or remove certain posts on the platform. Facebook will then accept and implement the Board's decisions. Throughout this consultation, we will ask questions about Board membership, decisions, and governance. Responses to these questions will help inform the design and implementation of the Oversight Board. |
