Today is the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the worst day in the history of the British Army. A few years ago I visited the site of this battle as it has a personal and cultural connection. Driving to Beaumont Hamel it was staggering the number of cemeteries I passed.
No point to this thread really, I just thought it merited remembrance. I have shone my shoes and gongs and will attend a ceremony at the National War Museum in Ottawa in honour of the Newfoundlanders but I will give a thought for the 2.3 million killed and wounded in less than 5 months.
