Heaven now or heaven later?

My family has had a couple of deaths in the past two years. At the time of each, family members would talk about the deceased as happily renewing old friendships in heaven and being free of the problems that caused their deaths.

The rest of my family and my inlaws are all Christians of various types. I'm agnostic (atheist agnostic to you purists), so I don't believe in heaven at all.

The point I'm getting around to is that people who study the Bible and try to be as good Christians as they can, seem to think that the soul is judged at the moment of death and sent to its destination right then. Like the cartoons showing a newly dead person at the gates of heaven.

Doesn't the Bible say that judgement will be done sometime in the future, when Jesus returns? Am I misunderstanding something?

If the Bible does say that judgement will be when Jesus returns, why do nearly all Christians that I know seem to believe the immediate judgement version?

I've got to say that envisioning my relatives happy and whole and welcoming the newest arrival to heaven right away is a pleasant fantasy. Nice for daydreams, but I don't believe it.
