While most attention is being given to the presidential race, state-level politics is just as contentious and annoying.
Here in Missouri, we have the Republican primaries coming up (finally...) and the candidates for the various state offices are all trying to out right-wing each other.
We all knew that "liberal"had become a perjorative term.... But that's not enough any more. Several of these guys are accusing their opponents of being "moderate".... And, Heaven forfend, being willing to compromise.
We have one fellow who's competing for the governor's slot who features an ad showing himself firing an AR and blowing up some tannerite...
Another has an ad showing some Chinese-looking businessmen walking around the Missouri farm they just bought. It had been illegal to sell farmland to foreign interests....But one candidate is accused of passing a bill that made it legal.
However....This happened 5 years ago, and the bill was drafted by a Republican committee and passed with non-partisan support from a large majority of the house. It allows up to 3% of Missouri farmland to be so sold.
Even the Chinese find the ad offensive....
Yet another ad promises to keep "dangerous Syrian refugees" out of the state, while showing footage of sinister commando-types sneaking across the desert. (Desert? Sneaking into the midwest? It's a long walk...)
And finally, one of the candidates for Attorney General promises to stop "liberal schemes" to cheat at the ballot box by enforcing voter-ID laws.... Even though no evidence of such jiggery-pokery has ever been found.
