It seems like one of the primary motivations for being a liberal these days is virtue signaling and moral posturing. How often do you hear those on the left reminding everyone how much they care for everyone other than themselves?
For example, take this post by NoahFence:
...an insult of another poster followed by self congratulations on how how much he 'cares' about those other than himself.
This example was picked more or less at random, but if you watch just about any debate or conversation between a modern liberal and a conservative, the liberal will usually compliment themselves on their selflessness and concern for others.
I've been noticing this for years, here and elsewhere. It seems as if one of the primary motivations for identifying as a liberal is self-aggrandizement.
