Is having a gun to hand all the time rational or not?

Is having a gun to hand, on you when you are out and about, in your car and at home next to your chair or bed rational or not?

My answer is that it is rational if there is a credible, likely, life threatening attack against you. It is not rational if you live in a low risk area, there is no reason to think anyone has it in for you and the most likely attack against you is a drunk trying to punch you on a night put at the pub because you bumped his drink.
