How do atheists handle "irl" debates?

Wow, what an unimpressive title!

Most people here live on the western hemisphere of the world. That means that the majority of people that you know believe in a supreme being, or a god. If you live in the United States, then many of you must know Christians, and work with them. On a forum like this, you can argue your point in a logical debate fashion, quote by quote. There are obviously no interruptions on an Internet forum, and it's generally much easier to formulate thoughts when typing them out as opposed to speaking out loud.

I'm interested to know how you handle people who are more passionate about their beliefs. Face to face arguments can get heated, and usually when debating the subject matter of god, these arguments do not end in a friendly compromise. In the worst case scenario, there could be a physical altercation, so I would be especially curious if anyone here has been in a situation like that.

Some people here have been affiliated with a religion in the past (for a number of years) to avoid arguments. That or social isolation from family and friends, which are usually the consequence of face to face arguments regarding this subject matter.

(I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place to put a topic like this.)
