One of my email addresses seems to have been released into the wild presumably off someone's computer with whom I've exchanged emails or possibly from a commercial site where I've used it, but I don't think I've used that address on websites for a long time.
Now that account is being inundated with spam. The messages allege to be offering a variety of services but they clearly emanate from the sane source. They all parse my name the same way having picked it out of the left hand side of that email address. If I click on the apparent 'From' in the message each has what looks like a random set of characters in two groups: 4-8 characters then a period then 2-4 more. That looks to me like unique random sequences to conceal the origin.
Is there anything useful I can do?
Will the source eventually give up spontaneously?
Does bouncing the messages help?
The messages seem to come from real-world companies. Is it possible that the 'unsubscribe' button will be responded to honestly or is it just a way to harvest validated email addresses?
Do I have to burn that account? I've had it for 9 years and I use it for quite a lot of professional communication so I'm reluctant to burn it just because one set of utter bastards has got hold of it.
It's a btinternet.com account, which means Yahoo!, in case that influences the suggested responses.
