Seeking Laptop Shopping Advice

My current laptop has served me for many years, and I'm interested in purchasing a new one. In shopping around and looking at recommendations (from Consumer Reports, C-Net and others), it's evident I'm way over my head in understanding what's current as well as what, for me, would be overkill.

I wish I could provide detailed specs on the one I have, but I'm not conversant in technical lingo. I will say (because it's says so right on the thing) that it is a 15" Dell Inspirion with an Intel i3 Core and Windows 7.

My needs: word processing and document & picture storage. I'm not a gamer so there's no need there. This one has an optical drive, which has been convenient, though I'm aware lightweight units these days do without. Portability is nice, but not a priority. Also, I was frustrated to discover when I purhased this pc that devices apparently no longer come equipped with the full Office suite as I'd prefer not to shell out bucks for a subscription. Ah well.

Also, I wonder if I should consider making the jump to Apple?

I'm budgeting no more than $800, and would be happy to come in well below that. However, considering I'd once again like to get several years out of the thing, I'm not adverse to going some degree or two higher for a robust keyboard and other worthwhile attributes.

Any thoughts will be welcome.
