Essential Smartphone Apps

As I was chasing some punk kids off my lawn the other day, I shuffled past a pawn shop window with a bank of TVs all tuned to some man talking about "smart" phones. A bit of yellow pages-reading afterward, and I'd saved up enough box tops to send off for one of my very own.

But like a dog chasing cars, now that I've got one, I don't know what to do with it.

I quickly added what apps I could think of off the top of my head - music player, yelp, e-reader, email, local weather, interactive star chart thing - but beyond that I'm drawing a blank. Browsing the store doesn't help much, as it's too full of identical, highly rated, colorful pieces of crap that demand full access to everything on my phone for marketing purposes. Googling for stuff just turns up sites like "all-great-android-apps.com," which are exactly as helpful as their SEO-friendly names would lead you to believe.

So I'd like your opinions.

What apps (utilities, games, etc) would you suggest I use, or at least try out? Which ones can't you live without?

I've got an android phone (cyanogenmod), but I'd be interested in what I'm missing on the fruit aisle as well.

I'd also appreciate recommendations for the following functionalities, if you know of any:
  • Text editor - which I cannot believe I have to actually download something to change files myself on my freakin' phone. Also necessary to make stub playlists for music folders.
  • An automatically updated HOSTS file to block advertisements and market mining at the device level. When even the flashlight app wants access to my browser history, blocking everything and deleting anything that whines too much about it is the only sane strategy.
  • A good roguelike. I've heard these are all the rage in the indie scene these days - what's on top right now?
  • A good space game. Preferably trade sim or Gradius descendant, not so much 4X.

If all else fails, I may have to try using it as a phone.
