As I sit here in enjoying a summer much like that of my youth and reading news of out of control bush fires I have to remind myself I don't live in Australia any more.
A little focused on aspect of "global warming" predictions are that the climate in my part of Sweden actually gets far more to my liking - hotter in summer and more snow in the winter. Perfect! (assuming we can fight off the invading hordes of suburnt mediterraneanites)
But that selfish view took a bit of a blow reading this blog by an arctic climate scientist - Is the climate dragon awakening?
You know those photos and videos of the mysterious "holes" turning up in Siberia? They, and others like them, may very well be one of the sources of anomalously high atmospheric methane readings by the (few) measuring stations in the polar regions.
On top of that, Swedish researchers have found large amounts of methane bubbling up from the sea floor - and making it in to the atmosphere. It was previously hypothesised most would be absorbed in to the water
As Climatologist Jason box has put it
Now, I think I'll go take a midnight dip in the pool ....

If even a small fraction of Arctic sea floor carbon is released to the atmosphere, we're f'd. |
