I have been reading with great interest the thread about the Exodus myth. It prompted me to try to read Exodus again. Almost immediately the questions arise. The more obvious ones (there are way too many to mention all of them) - all those Israelites, reproducing like rabbits but only two midwives. Plus we are given their names? They are actually allowed into Pharaoh's presence - twice - and he personally gives them instructions, then just lets them go when they disobey. Right. Moses's mother first abandons her baby, then gets him back, then simply hands him over to Pharaoh's daughter again? Moses grows up in the royal household as an Egyptian but apparently remains fully Israelite. Father in law is Reuel one moment, Jethro the next. We learn Moses has a brother. So obviously throwing baby boys into the Nile as per Pharaoh's express command didn't last long. How does Moses even know him if he was brought up in the royal household? God sends Moses back to Egypt then decides to kill him for no apparent reason, then changes his mind when Zipporah cuts the foreskin of "her son" (which one? 5 verses earlier they have several). What? I'm sorry at that point I had to stop reading because it just seemed too silly. I am hoping some of the more learned contributors may be able to explain this story. It really is too ridiculous to just take at face value, so are there underlying messages in the text that I need to understand in order to make sense of the nonsense?
