I guess that initial thoughts are that updrafts must have thrown them out of the atmosphere.
What about a meteor strike? It would have to be a big one to eject this out of the atmosphere, but if they can survive those conditions, could they have possibly been out there since day one? (Well, day one of manned space flight)
