It seems like almost every time religion is criticized on this forum (at least when the religion in question is Islam) a band of loud defenders step in to protect religion, sometimes ending up in a confused rant about atheist fundamentalism. These people I think do not have much religious faith themselves, but still apparently love that others have. They believe in belief.
But why? What's so precious about religious faith? Why the need to defend it? Religion should be subject to skeptical inquiry, not shielded from it.
An old issue of eSkeptic deals a little with belief in belief.
