Tom Tom 600 peculiarity.

Maybe this info can be useful to somebody:

Some time ago, I bought a Tom Tom Go 600 navigator. I was a bit annoyed at the low light intensity of the screen (making it hard to read on a bright day) and the ridiculous charging rate (after driving with it connected for three hours, it reported that "your battery needs charging").

Very pecularly, the display brightened considerably if the unit was disconnected from the charger.

Close reading of the online manual did hint at any solution.

The other day, however, I found the solution somewhere on teh interwebs:

Use the original adaptor supplied with the unit. I had not, as I wanted an extra USB slot for occasional charging of my phone, so I bought a two-slot car adaptor.

It seems that the unit senses the current supply capability of the charger and adjusts its current consumption accordingly, turning down display backlight intensity and charge current, as it deems necessary. - And, apparantly, the original adaptor has better power.

Once I ran it on the original charger, everything was fine. If, occasionally, I need to also charge my phone while driving, I must then either do without the navigator or live with a dim schreen (since my car has only one 12V outlet).
