Well, as the title says, the whole thing strikes me as bloody pointless. And I don't just mean my usual point that it's just gay BDSM. But even from a theological point, let's look at the actual scriptures and doctrines.
And I'll try to stick to Catholicism, just because there are way too many interpretation to make sure that my point covers them all. So anyone wanting to object just that it doesn't cover ALL variants of Xianity, including past, present, future, hypothetical and imaginary, well, objection overruled.
So let's see:
- Jesus is eternal, same as the Father. He always existed. (Basic doctrine, cf Gospel of John.)
- You can only be saved by Jesus, but apparently he can do it even if you never were baptized, and you don't believe in him, or even if you actively deny him. (Current "anonymous Xian" doctrine. Look it up. Also, current accepted possibility for unbaptized babies.)
- People could be made free from original sin and more than fit for God even before the crucifixion. (See the immaculate conception of Mary. It's actually an official infallible doctrine, so, you know, it can't be wrong. Even another pope can't take that one back.)
- People could be saints, i.e., go to heaven, because that's what saint means, even before Jesus. (See, Matthew 27:52 "And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose")
So... what on Earth was the crucifixion needed FOR, then? If God can just make one free of any sin and elligible for heavens even before the crucifixion event, and without their even having heard of Jesus yet (Mary would learn of Jesus MUCH later than her conception,) then why did the dude have to get nailed? What purpose does it serve?
