Patiently waiting for the wind to calm and carefully making sure he would not hit the bird, Galvin used 150 rounds and a borrowed .22 caliber rifle, which had a better scope than his own, over the course of 90 minutes to clear obstructing branches, shoot the rope and the branch the bird was dangling from.
The result was the eagle safely making it to the ground, with underbrush helping to break its fall. The Galvins were then able to wrap it in a blanket and put it in their dog kennel. From there the DNR took it to the Raptor Center veterinarian.
