Yesterday, and again today, there was a zero contribution from coal to the supply of electricity to the UK. While this might not seem a big deal to many people, I can tell you this is an extraordinary event, and a sign of the changing times.
Coal was at one time the lifeblood of Britain, and employed people by the hundreds of thousands. At one time, you might expect some 90% of the electricity generation to come from coal. Instead, we get the following:
(The coal figure is slightly negative since some power stations draw their internal supplies back through their unit transformers, resulting in negative "generation".)
