I had a letter about a year ago telling me that my aunt had the BRCA2 genetic mutation. She'd been tested because both her and my mother had breast cancer (at about 55 and 48 respectively). I didn't get stressed over it as I understood the risk in men is less significant; it just meant a bit of extra fondling myself now and then.
Next week, I return to the UK for the first time in a couple of years, and as my girlfriend and I are talking about starting a family, I thought the responsible thing to do would be to get a genetic test done. I intend to visit my GP to have the test, but don't really know much about that procedure. The NHS website is understandably focused more on testing women.
Can anyone here tell me about the process and the timescale involved?
Feel free to chip in with other genetic testing if you think it would be useful.
Thanks.
