Ships' wakes

I've been sat on a beach recently with large ships passing by. Intermittently their wakes reach shore, which led me to ponder how quickly their wakes propagate at right angles to their direction of travel.

How does it relate to the speed of forward motion? Is it dictated by the shape of the bow?
