Religion and sex abuse - a double whammy?

I ponder the nature of the mental trauma suffered by those who have been subjected to sexual abuse as children by clergy - I wonder why it is so devastating. How is it that these unfortunate victims suffer so much from trauma into their adulthood, when they have clearly been victims, not perpetrators, and there may not be much, if any, physical damage to them?

I wonder if the answer might be they have the sense of guilt, about sexual acts, drummed into them by the same clergy, that fuels this idea.

So we have this "double whammy"?
