Disclaimer - I am not really an animal person, but have a huge amount of respect for the Dickins medal, so consider this thread a bit self indulgent
Brit's on the forum will probably know about this, but for the benefit of others in 1943 an award for gallantry was created for animals. It was created by Maria Dickin to honour animals in WW2
The Dickins medal is widely regarded as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross (The highest medal for humans). It bears the words "For Gallantry" and "We Also Serve"
It has been awarded 67 times

A couple of days ago Lucca, a US marine IED dog went to Britain to be awarded one. She lost a leg when an IED went off while searching for another
