Paranormal experiences related to grief

I have found it very interesting that a large number of people who lose a loved one experience supernatural phenomena. These experiences include seeing, hearing, talking to, and in some cases touching the apparition (psychologists like to use the term apparition as opposed to ghost, apparently). These experiences start to trail off five years or so after the loss, but can continue for decades. One aspect of these experiences is that the person experiencing the apparitions rarely talk about what is happening, even to close friends or relatives.

Some research has been done showing that this is most likely with widows and widowers who were over 40 who were happily married and had children. I have not found any studies for people who have lost friends, but unreliable anecdotes abound. Judging from the anecdotes it is possible for good friends to see apparitions.

I find it very interesting that ghost hunters are stalking about old houses and whatnot when millions of people are having the experience of seeing and hearing their dead spouses, late parents, and whatnot.

Not many studies seem to have been done on this, as psychologists seem to view it as normal and helpful in overcoming grieving. I was surprised to find out that talking to your dead loved ones for a decade was somehow a normal thing.

I was able to find this study from 1971, and if anyone else has any good peer-reviewed good research on the subject I would love to see it.
