Six year old Oshin Strachan was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer known as "medulloblastoma" last year and underwent surgery. He also required follow up with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, after learning how horrific this process would be and that it would at best give him another 5 years of very poor living, Oshin's parents refused to sign the consent forms and instead decided to take him to Germany for alternative palliative care.
However, in a bizzare move, the doctor took the parents to court and got an order forcing them to consent to the chemotherapy and banning the parents from taking Oshin overseas.

A Princess Margaret Hospital doctor took legal action after Angela Kiszko and Adrian Strachan refused chemotherapy and radiotherapy for their son Oshin, who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in December. - - - - - - The court was told Oshin, who had surgery last year, would die within a few months without treatment. However, he had a 30 per cent prospect of surviving for five years if chemotherapy started immediately and a 50 per cent chance with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. - - - - - - “If he survives, he will have hearing aids, cataracts in his eyes, his spine won’t develop properly, he will never have an IQ over 70,” she (Family friend Lynda Jones) told Seven News. “His thyroid and pituitary gland will be bastardised and he will need hormones for his whole life.” |
